Stop Arming Dangerous People - Sign the Petition

It's time Congress listened to the American people and not the narrow and dangerous interests of the gun lobby. Too many politicians are doing the bidding of NRA and subscribing to their dark and paranoid vision of America where people are armed to the teeth anywhere they go.

We want a different vision of America where a kid like Trayvon Martin can go to the store and buy a pack a Skittles and an iced tea without getting shot.

It's time we made our voices heard! Sign the petition to let our elected officials know they will not get your vote in November unless they make a commitment to keep dangerous guns out of the hands of dangerous people.

If they don't, they won't get your vote!

ALEC’s Decision Shows NRA Becomes Toxic When Exposed to Light

In the weeks since George Zimmerman’s killing of Trayvon Martin, corporate America has been force fed a crash survey of public opinion on gun policy. Some of America’s most popular –and message-savvy — companies announced their swift verdict when they, and then the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC), withdrew support for the National Rifle Association’s paranoid, violent agenda.

ALEC’s abrupt abandonment of the conservative agenda’s gun plank wasn’t caused by sympathy for Trayvon or the 32 murdered by gunfire each day in America. ALEC’s corporate sponsors are a bottom line bunch, and for years were happy to push for NRA laws to force guns on college campuses, deprive cities of the authority to regulate guns, and, most notably, “Stand Your Ground” or “Shoot First, Ask Questions Later” laws that embolden and immunize killers.

Under the spotlight of America’s scrutiny, so glaring was the culpability of ALEC in implementing the gun lobby’s dark vision, that Coke and Pepsi, McDonald’s and Wendy’s, Kraft and Mars, Blue Cross and Bill Gates all reached the same conclusion: association with the NRA’s extremist agenda was toxic.

The message from ALEC’s decision is clear. When exposed to the light, the NRA's agenda becomes toxic. And Americans want nothing to do with those who conspire to bring about the gun lobby’s dangerous “guns everywhere” vision.

Senator Feinstein Puts “Hold” on George Zimmerman Act!
Click on arrow to learn more!

Just hours after her staff met with gun violence victims from the California Chapters of the Brady Campaign, and one day after 32 victims of gun violence came to Capitol Hill to demand that Congress keep guns out of the hands of dangerous people, Senator Dianne Feinstein put a “hold” on the concealed carry bills we believe should be called the “George Zimmerman Acts.” This dangerous legislation would force virtually every state to allow dangerous people, like George Zimmerman, to legally carry loaded and hidden handguns across state line and into our communities.

Senator Feinstein’s “hold” will ensure the gun lobby won’t be able to “fast track” the legislation.

On behalf of the overwhelming majority of Americans, we thank Senator Feinstein for standing up for our safety and preventing more tragedies like the ones represented by the victims gathered in Washington DC.

NRA Still Promoting "Shoot First, Ask Questions Later"

Since George Zimmerman’s killing of Trayvon Martin, America’s outrage over the gun lobby's deadly "Shoot First" laws forced the NRA into a two-month self-imposed silent exile. The shooting exposed the darkness and danger of their vision with unusual clarity.  Their reaction was to remain unusually silent.

Despite the shift in momentum we helped to create over the last few months and despite the tragic killing of Trayvon Martin by George Zimmerman, it seems the NRA is now back to their usual business of using fear and paranoia to justify their agenda of political extremism and selling as many guns to as many people as possible.

The NRA has now issued another ridiculous and misleading statement saying "Shoot First" laws are needed to protect the "innocent."  We wonder whether Trayvon Martin’s parents would agree with that.

This time, the American people are not going to let the gun lobby just go back to business as usual -- using lies and deception to sell more guns to people like George Zimmerman.

Brady will continue to expose the deadly consequences of the gun lobby’s agenda and will shine a spotlight on those elected officials who choose to protect gun industry profits over Americans’ lives.  We will make sure that voters know which candidates are not public servants, but servants to the gun lobby and, as a result, are true accomplices in the unnecessary tragedies for which their policies are directly responsible.

Tell Your Senators to Vote NO on "George Zimmerman Act"

George Zimmerman, the killer of Trayvon Martin, is the NRA's vision of America. The proposed George Zimmerman Armed Vigilante Acts (S. 2213 and S. 2188), would force virtually every state to allow Zimmerman, and dangerous people like him, to legally carry loaded and hidden handguns in our communities. Imagine that: "George Zimmermans" walking your streets. Armed and dangerous. That's the gun lobby's vision for America. But it's not ours.

If a state has strong laws that would prevent someone like Zimmerman — who had an arrest record and a violent past — from getting a concealed carry permit, tough luck.

These new bills would force states with strong gun laws like New York — where Zimmerman never could have gotten a permit — to honor the concealed carry permits of states with abhorrently low standards, such as Florida.

We stand with the American people in flatly rejecting the NRA's vision and replacing it with our own vision of an America where young people can go out to buy a pack of Skittles and can of tea in safety.

UPDATE: On April 16, the 5 year mark of the Virginia Tech shooting, 32 victims of gun violence descended on Capitol to meet with House and Senate leaders to lobby against the "George Zimmerman Act". Shortly after a meeting with a group of these victims and survivors and her staff, Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) issued a strongly-worded letter opposing the legislation and requesting a hold on the bills.

Keep Guns Off College Campuses!

» Join the Brady Action Alert network to help us stop this dangerous legislation!

The Brady Campaign opposes efforts to force college and school officials to allow students and teachers to carry hidden handguns on campus and in classrooms.

Introducing guns into a volatile environment where binge drinking and drug use are all too prevalent would dramatically increase the risks of suicide, gun thefts, and the number of gun violence victims.

The gun lobby's priority is to force guns into every nook and cranny of American life. Our priority is to prevent the loss of innocent life through gun violence. We are determined to stop gun lobby-backed legislation that would force colleges and universities to allow possession or use of firearms on campus. If these state laws were to pass, it would mean that students as young as 18-years-old could carry handguns with high-capacity assault clips to class or keep an UZI pistol in their dorm rooms.

Victims Ask Congress: Are You For, Or Against, Arming Dangerous People?

On the 5th anniversary of the Virginia Tech shooting that took the lives of 32 innocent Americans, a group of 32 gun violence victims gathered outside the U.S. Capitol to demand that Members of Congress sign a Statement of Principle Against Arming Dangerous People and reject Senate bills that the Brady Campaign has dubbed the “George Zimmerman Armed Vigilante Acts."

The Brady Campaign also launched an online petition asking Americans not to vote for elected officials who refuse to sign the statement.
